1,3-Butadiene is a colorless gas with a mild gasoline-like odor. Large amounts of 1,3-butadiene are produced every year to make synthetic rubber, plastics and rubber. Workers engaged in these processes can be exposed to high levels of 1,3-Butadiene. The gas has also been found at hazardous waste sites and is present in minute concentrations in gasoline vapors, gasoline and diesel exhausts, smoke from wood fires, and cigarette smoke.
